Thataway Support
Tell us what happened, which iPhone and Apple Watch you use, their iOS and watchOS versions, and what you expected. Send a route or location only if it’s needed to explain the problem.
How do I set up the Watch app?
Thataway’s Watch app comes with the iPhone app. If it isn’t on your Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone, find Thataway under Available Apps and tap Install. Open Thataway on the Watch once and allow Health and location access when asked.
Plan a route on your iPhone and send it to the Watch. Keep the Watch nearby and unlocked while it copies the route, map and turn directions. Once the route shows as ready on the Watch, you can run without your phone.
Which Health permissions does Thataway need?
On iPhone, Thataway asks to read workouts, heart rate, running power and workout routes so it can show your run history and score Pain Points. On Apple Watch, it asks to save workouts and routes so your runs land in Apple Health.
If runs appear without a map, Workout Routes is probably off. Open the Health app, tap your profile picture, then Apps (or Privacy → Apps), choose Thataway and turn on Workout Routes for both reading and writing. You can change any of these permissions there at any time.
How do I connect Strava?
In Thataway on your iPhone, open Settings and tap Connect Strava. Sign in to Strava and allow Thataway to upload activities. Runs you record with Thataway then upload a few minutes after you finish, once their route is in Apple Health. Thataway checks Strava first, so nothing is uploaded twice.
Only runs recorded with Thataway are uploaded. To stop, tap Disconnect Strava in Settings. Runs already on Strava stay there until you delete them on Strava.
What are Pain Points?
Pain Points show how hard a run is working you, live on your Watch and in your history afterwards. About 100 points is an hour at your threshold: the fastest pace you could hold for an hour. Thataway uses running power if the run has it, then pace, then heart rate. Without a threshold for the method a run uses, it gets a rough estimate from time alone.
Thataway suggests thresholds from your runs in Apple Health: pace from your best sustained runs, and heart rate and power from your best 20 minutes. You can change them under Pain Points in Settings.
How do I make Pain Points match TrainingPeaks?
Use the same thresholds TrainingPeaks uses. In TrainingPeaks, open Account Settings, then Zones. Copy the threshold from each of Power, Speed/Pace and Heart Rate, using the Run section where there is one, into the matching fields under Pain Points in Thataway’s Settings. Leave a field empty if TrainingPeaks has none. You don’t need to change anything in TrainingPeaks.
Power matters most if your Watch records running power, because TrainingPeaks scores runs from power first. Small differences can remain, for example where the two apps handle pauses or GPS gaps differently.
How do offline maps work?
When you send a route to your Watch, Thataway prepares the map around the route and the turn directions, and copies them to the Watch. The Watch confirms when the route is ready offline; after that you don’t need your phone or a signal to follow it.
Common turn instructions are spoken without any download. For full spoken street names, download a voice in the Watch voice settings. If a download stops, tap Retry; files already copied are reused.
Route planning says it’s busy
Route planning goes through a shared service with a limit on how many routes it can work out at once. When it’s busy, Thataway tells you so. Try again in a few minutes, or draw that part of the route by hand. Routes you have already planned and sent to your Watch are unaffected.
My route on the Watch went the wrong way
Routes follow map data, which can be out of date or miss closures. Follow local signs and rules and use your judgment. If a path is wrong on the map, you can help fix it at OpenStreetMap.
